About

The Project

The Singapore Dictionary Project is an initiative to build the most comprehensive multilingual database of terms used in the Singapore context.

Our proprietary technology monitors and analyses multilingual corpora, including those from government and media sources, to extract relevant terms for human validation by in-house linguists. Newly collected terms are added several times a month. Part of the terms were collected as part of a translation technology project funded by the Interactive Digital Media Programme Office of the Media Development Authority of Singapore (http://www.idm.sg/).

As the terms are extracted from various resources, including newspapers, websites and official databases, there may be some existing errors already present in the source materials. Users can click on the icon to the right of a term to report any errors and also suggest any terms that they feel should be included. Validation of all terms are still ongoing in this beta version and is expected to be completed by February 2011.

The English-Chinese Singapore terminology database currently contains close to 250,000 terms. In this online version, we have also made available specialised terminology from the following domains: (a) Business & Finance, (b) Medical, (c) China News and (d) Science and Technology, totalling close to 700,000 terms.
