The Singapore Dictionary Project is an initiative to build the most comprehensive multilingual database of terms used in the Singapore context. These include names of people, organisations, programmes and places, as well as terms that appear in the news (e.g., astroturf, crutch mentality).

 

The English-Chinese Singapore terminology database currently contains close to 250,000 terms culled from the media and official sources over the past seven years and updated several times a month. A portion of the terms were collected as part of a translation technology project funded by the Interactive Digital Media Programme Office of the Media Development Authority of Singapore (http://www.idm.sg/).

 

As the terms are extracted from various resources, including newspapers, websites and official databases, there may be some existing errors already present in the source materials. You can click on the icon on the right of a term to report any errors you see and also suggest any terms that you feel should be included. Validation of all terms are still ongoing in this beta version and is expected to be completed by February 2011.

 

Other than Singapore-specific terms, this system also contains specialised terminology from the following domains: (a) Business & Finance, (b) Medical, (c) China News and (d) Science and Technology, totalling close to 700,000 terms in all. As it is not meant to be a general purpose dictionary, you will not be able to find translations of generic words and phrases on the system.
